A DeKalb County, Georgia teacher called and requested that a substitute teacher take over his social studies class at McNair High school the day he fatally shot his male lover.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Roy McClendon-Thompson called the school about an hour after he shot and killed James Curtis Jones, a man he’d met on the homosexual dating app Jack’d in November.

Police say McClendon-Thompson, 42, drove over to the Arrive Perimeter apartments, where Jones lived, in Dunwoody at 5 a.m. on Monday, April 8.

Residents called 911 to report hearing yelling and gunshots.

Police found Jones dead in the apartment’s underground parking deck around 5:20 a.m. Jones, 45, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Jones is pictured below.

According to the, McClendon-Thompson returned home after the shooting and called his school at 6:23 a.m. to request that a substitute teacher cover his class.

He fled his Ellenwood home when police arrived to speak with him about the shooting.

McClendon-Thompson died in a head-on car crash during a police pursuit in Clayton County around 11 a.m.

The AJC reports McClendon was arrested in Atlanta last year and charged with embezzling $100,000 from his church. A church secretary reported to police that between November 2015 and last April, McClendon-Thompson made multiple cash withdrawals from the church account and deposited the money into his own accounts, according to a police report obtained by the AJC.

At the time, McClendon-Thompson worked part-time as the chief financial officer for Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atlanta.

McClendon-Thompson was charged with theft by taking and financial transaction card theft.

He was booked into the Fulton County Jail and released on $15,000 bond.

He was allowed to return to his teaching job at McNair High School after his arrest.
