Johannes Hendrikus Hubert “John” de Mol Jr. (born 24 April 1955) is a Dutch media tycoon and television producer. De Mol is one of the men behind production companies Endemol and Talpa and is worth about US$ 1.5 billion. He is known for being the creator of the original Dutch versions of Big Brother and The Voice.
Dutch media tycoon John de Mol first struck it rich as a founding investor, along with Joop van den Ende, in production company Endemol, associated with such reality TV hits as Deal or No Deal, Fear Factor and Big Brother. Endemol was sold to Spanish telecom giant Telefonica in 2000 for $5.3 billion. In May 2007, he returned as one of the major shareholders of Endemol, together with the Italian company Mediaset of Silvio Berlusconi in a 2.6 billion Euro deal.. He is now one of the biggest in reality TV.
John de Mol holds stake in RDF Media, which produces Wife Swap, and RTL Netherlands. Although he concentrated his energy on developing TV and multimedia shows via Talpa Media, such as the hit show “The Voice”, he sold the company in March 2015 to British ITV for an initial cash payment of $545 million. However, he still remains as head of the creative process at Talpa Media. Some other creations of the media company include Battle of the Choirs; quiz shows Pretty Smart, Dating in the Dark and Know Your Nation.

De Mol was formerly married to singer and actress Willeke Alberti. The actor Johnny de Mol is their son. From 1980 to 1984, Luv’ singer Marga Scheide was his partner. Outside of television, de Mol controls a large private equity fund which, at one time, owned significant shares of car manufacturer Spyker Cars and telecommunications company Versatel.
