Akon on Living in Trump’s America: “I Feel Very Uncomfortable”

So, what’s Akon up to? As he announced earlier this year, he’s starting his own cryptocurrency, Akoin, as well as starting a cryptocurrency-driven city in Senegal, named Akoin Crypto City, of course.

There’s also the possibility of a 2020 presidential bid, which Akon claims he’s been thinking about “very seriously.”

While all of these things, which Akon revealed to Newsweek, sound a bit fantastical, it was Akon’s grounding commentary on the Trump presidency that brought us back to our current reality.

“I feel a lot more unsafe,” he said, regarding how he feels in Trump’s America. “I feel unempowered. Honestly, I feel it’s gonna be a fight. I feel like I should be always prepared for the unexpected. I feel very uncomfortable. And I feel a lot of Americans do; even some white Americans feel that way because they’re watching backlash of his decisions. It’s not what’s happening now, because it’s clear it’s creating a whole bunch of divide today. But I think tomorrow that impact is going to be so much more devastating.”

While plenty of celebrities have spoken out against Trump, be it in the written word or in song, few have brought their emotions forward so candidly. Akon’s remarks are a not-so-friendly reminder that, in America, class cannot erase race nor a connection to greater humanity.

Akon’s discomfort echoes a national sentiment and has the potential to be a potent call to action. Election Day is November 6. Vote.
